Micheladas: A Spicy Bee-ry Drink

I’m not going to lie–I gave a slight double take when Ktams suggested we make some Micheladas.

A Michelada is a Mexican, beer-based cocktail of sorts, usually made up of lime, Mexican beer (light or dark, depending on your preference), and hot sauce. For our first attempt we used Modelo Especial (you can also try Bohemia). The version we made was the Chelada.

  • 1 12 oz Mexican beer
  • 2-3 ice cubes
  • 2 T lime juice
  • 1 healthy serving of hot sauce (you can add more at the end if it seems a bit mild)
  • 1/4 t sea salt
  • Coarse salt to rim the glass (optional)

Use a PINT GLASS for this recipe, as the beer will foam quite a lot and you need space for it to go. If you choose to rim your glass, wet the rim and roll in the coarse salt (I find that warm or hot water works best for rimming–as a twist you may also try wetting with lime juice instead of water, though that may keep you from using the residual salt for anything else). Drop in ice cubes, lime, salt, and hot sauce. Stir vigorously until combined. Pour your beer in nice and fast to facilitate proper mixing of the liquids, and allow foam to settle a bit. Consume responsibly. Makes 1 drink.
